This horizontal Accent-sided fossil fish mural was quarried from a rare dark limestone layer that we call “Mosaic Lake I”. It offers unique tans and gray colors with a light texture. The fossils found in this layer are typically exceptionally well preserved as the stone is harder and more compact than other lighter-colored stone. The fossil fish include an 18" Diplomysuts dentatus, an 8-1/2" Phareodus encaustus, and a partially exposed Knightia eocaena. Portions of the Knightia are exposed and parts of the skull and tail are left unprepared. The outline of the tail can be seen just below the surface of the stone. The age of the fossils is 50 million years, Early Eocene. The fossil mural is framed in a hand-made Wenge wood frame, backed in wood with a two-part French cleat added for easy hanging.
